The Synopsis

Does life go on when your heart is broken?

Since her mother’s sudden death, Emma has existed in a fog of grief, unable to let go, unable to move forward—because her mother is, in a way, still there. She’s being kept alive on machines for the sake of the baby growing inside her.

Estranged from her stepfather and letting go of things that no longer seem important—grades, crushes, college plans—Emma has only her best friend to remind her to breathe. Until she meets a boy with a bad reputation who sparks something in her—Caleb Harrison, whose anger and loss might just match Emma’s own. Feeling her own heart beat again wakes Emma from the grief that has grayed her existence. Is there hope for life after death—and maybe, for love?

My Thoughts

Emma is seventeen her life has just exploded, when her pregnant mother dies suddenly, leaving her stepfather with the impossible choice to keep Emma’s mother alive by artificial means to keep the baby alive or let them both go.

Emma is heartbroken and angry she resents her stepfather for keeping her mother alive.

Dan is Emma’s Stepfather he loses his love but has the chance to save his sons life in the meantime he also loses Emma’s love and trust.

Olivia is Emma’s best friend she is the definition of a BFF, she is there for Emma whenever she needs no matter the time or day.  Although Olivia doesn’t truly know what Emma is going through, she tries her best to help Emma through her grief.

Caleb is the bad boy, he comes from a rich family but rebels through doing drugs and stealing cars, currently doing community service of  Emma’s mother’s ward we learn that Caleb is haunted by grief that can help Emma and bring them together.

Heart beat should be called heartbreak and you definitely need the tissues for this one. Heart beat is emotional, raw and heart breaking account of the grief felt when we lose the most important person closest to us.  I loved how we get to see the emotions being played out not just by Emma but by everyone surrounding her, Emma and her Anger, Dan and his grief and despair, Olivia who want to fix things for Emma but is frustrated in how Emma is treating everyone and Caleb who is feeling grief and guilt over the loss of his sister.

You will enjoy this touching story if you loved the Fault in our stars, It is a Must Read.

  1. I’ll have to read this one when I’m in the mood for a tearjerker (yes, I have those moods 😉 I’ve read several of Ms. Scott’s books and have always enjoyed them. I’m glad you loved this one!

  2. This sounds amazing. Of course I see it as a movie. The stages of grief have been an odd interest of mine for a long time. I might just break out the Kleenix and read this one. I hope all is well, Jodie! Oh, I never heard from you about the giveaway.
